Whats Wrong With Eggs? Are Eggs Bad For You?
Well nothing it seems!
Eggs have had some bad press in the past, and consumers are still unsure of whether they should limit their egg consumption, but it appears there might well be nothing wrong with eggs after all.
When I was growing up, my mum used to cook me scrambled eggs every single day before school. Whilst some of you may think, oh how thoughtful and lucky to be made breakfast every day, and yes, it was when I look back. She always maintained that there was nothing wrong with eggs, despite the bad press they had at the time.
But having the same thing every single day can become a bit dull, and you quickly realise what is wrong with eggs if all you ever eat is them.
However, it did force me to eat something in the morning, and I was incredibly fussy, like a lot of teenagers. Having a good breakfast in the morning is still the most important meal of the day.
But at the time, eggs were not seen as the healthy breakfast that they are today, my mother obviously ignored this fact. Too many eggs were said to give us too much bad cholesterol and lead to coronary heart disease!….So glad that this turned out not to be true then.
This was because scientists thought that foods that were high in cholesterol would raise our blood cholesterol levels which would give us a higher incidence of heart disease. But after scientists studied eggs for 25 years, they realised that it wasn’t so much the cholesterol, but more the saturated fat that had more of an impact on our blood cholesterol, like the saturated fat found in some fatty red meats, and processed meats.
Extensive research has shown that there is no link between eating eggs and the risk for coronary heart disease. Ironically eggs contain nutrients that lower the risk for heart disease such as vitamin B12, protein, Choline which enhances brain development and memory and nutrients Lutein and Zeaxanthin which helps prevent macular degeneration of the eyes, one of the leading causes of blindness in older age.
Eggs are so nutrient dense they are guaranteed to lift your mood and prevent those dips in energy by keeping your blood sugar levels stable.
Eggs are eaten quite a lot in my house, but I have four of my own chickens, so I am fortunate enough to always have a steady supply of eggs.
So yes, eat eggs without guilt especially for breakfast to keep you going throughout the day!
